Anniversary periods: what are they?
When you’re pregnant, bleeding is often a source of anxiety and stress. However, a pregnant woman can experience various bleedings, especially during the first trimester, which are quite normal. On the blog, we’ve already talked about postpartum menstrual swimwear, lochia, breastfeeding, postpartum protection, and everything that can happen during this special and intense period: the postpartum.
Today on the Louloucup blog, we’re discussing bleeding during pregnancy, especially anniversary bleeding.
What exactly is it? And how do you manage it well? By now, you know us—we have the perfect solution for you to make your pregnancy as peaceful as possible: postpartum menstrual underwear, of course!

Is it possible to be pregnant and still have your period?
When you’re pregnant, your period stops. Pregnant women no longer have monthly menstruation. However, they can experience some bleeding, notably anniversary bleeding. That’s why it’s important for them to be properly equipped with high-quality, absorbent, and reliable menstrual protection to avoid any unfortunate leaks.
What types of bleeding can occur during pregnancy?
Some women may experience bleeding during pregnancy that is not dangerous. These uterine bleeds are not periods. When they occur during the first trimester, especially in the first weeks, this bleeding is most often related to embryo implantation.
Vaginal bleeding during the first months of pregnancy can also be caused by hormonal fluctuations, uterine fragility, a slight placental detachment, or following a gynecological exam.
So having bleeding doesn’t automatically mean you’re experiencing a miscarriage, a high-risk pregnancy, or that you will have complications. When in doubt, consult a doctor. If you experience heavier bleeding accompanied by abdominal or pelvic pain, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice!
Anniversary periods—what does that actually mean?
We use the term “periods,” but in reality, these are more like bleeding caused by pregnancy—so they’re false periods. The term “anniversary” refers to the fact that this bleeding often, but not always, occurs around the time your period would have happened if you weren’t pregnant. One in four women experiences these anniversary periods. So it’s quite common. This vaginal bleeding is not dangerous for either the mother or the baby.
How can you recognize anniversary periods so you don’t worry unnecessarily?
Anniversary periods occur within the first three months of pregnancy. These false periods are painless, relatively short (shorter than normal menstruation), and pink or brown in color (not red). Anniversary periods can be heavy, but not always. If the bleeding is intense and prolonged, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor.
