Menstrual cups: pros and cons
Not totally convinced by the menstrual cup yet? This zero waste, eco-friendly, and economical alternative has a lot going for it. Still, many people have doubts about how to use it, its reliability, or its practicality.
Louloucup weighs the pros and cons, the real benefits and the possible dangers of menstrual cups!
The benefits of menstrual cups
- It’s a clean, reliable, leak-proof internal protection. When properly positioned, the cup won’t let anything pass. This inverted bell collects menstrual flow optimally throughout your period, keeping you clean and dry. With the cup, there’s no dampness. It’s a fresh, clean feeling you just can’t get from a regular pad.
- With the cup, there’s no risk of vaginal dryness or disrupting your vaginal flora, and no risk of infections or yeast thanks to its clean composition. The menstrual cup is hypoallergenic and healthy for your intimate area, especially thanks to medical-grade silicone. It’s a much better option compared to traditional disposable tampons.
- Its reservoir can hold a large amount of flow. The menstrual cup is therefore suitable for heavy or very heavy flows.
- It’s extremely comfortable to use. A well-placed cup is one you can’t feel at all. Super soft, it’s a truly comfortable intimate solution to use.
- With a cup, there are no bad odors! That’s right—the blood collected in the cup’s reservoir never touches air, so there’s no oxidation.
-
Menstrual cups are perfect for swimming, at the pool, at the beach, or on vacation! It’s truly the most convenient protection for safe, worry-free swimming. With a cup, there’s zero leakage, zero stains on your towel or swimsuit, even for heavy flow!
- Very economical, the cup is a washable sanitary product that is durable and reusable. You can use it for a long time (several years) if you take good care of it. While the upfront cost is higher than a box of disposable tampons or pads, it pays for itself after just a few uses.
- The menstrual cup gives you unmatched freedom if you want to move freely during sports, at work, or in everyday life. You can feel free and worry-free for many hours.
- The cup is also eco-friendly and good for the environment. By not creating waste from your period, you’re not polluting anymore. Just like period underwear, the menstrual cup is a zero-waste period product.
- Once you get used to it, the cup is super easy and convenient to use. After a few hours, just go to the bathroom, empty your cup, rinse it, and reinsert. That’s it!
- The menstrual cup is an internal protection that is invisible and super discreet. No lines under your pants, no diaper effect!
The disadvantages of menstrual cups
- Using a menstrual cup requires a bit of comfort with your body at first. The first insertions can be intimidating. That’s normal when you’re unfamiliar and haven’t mastered the technique yet. However, users quickly get the hang of it. Feel free to consult our very comprehensive User Guide.
- The sight of blood can put some people off. You also have to wash the menstrual cup by hand.
- When emptying your cup, you should be near a restroom with a faucet and water access. No faucet? Bring a bottle of water with you so you can rinse your cup and wash your hands. You can also keep a backup cup in your bag. There are several options.
- Between each cycle, at the start of your menstrual cycle, take the time to sterilize your cup to remove any bacteria. Simple method: boil it in water. Even simpler: use a sterilizer designed for your cup.
- Just like tampons, menstrual cups should not be worn for more than 6 hours at a time (risk of developing TSS, toxic shock syndrome).
- We do not recommend wearing a menstrual cup overnight. Nights usually last more than 6 hours. Instead, opt for heavy or super heavy flow period underwear to stay dry and safe while you sleep. Extremely comfortable, period underwear is truly perfect for sleeping.
- Menstrual cups should not be used postpartum.
- It also shouldn’t be worn during sexual intercourse.
- Finally, we always recommend getting your gynecologist’s or midwife’s approval before using a cup if you have an IUD (intrauterine device), whether copper or hormonal.
