The essentials of period underwear
Everything you need to know about period underwear, the underwear that holds menstrual flow without leaking during your period. Check out our Complete Guide to Period Underwear for even more info and tips.
Menstrual underwear looks a lot like regular underwear. It's just as pretty, and it's always a pleasure to wear! The main difference is its absorbent membrane sewn into the core between the inner and outer fabric. This membrane is dense, wide, and made from technical fabrics and materials with a very high absorption capacity.
The hygienic underwear holds menstrual flow thanks to its membrane, capturing and locking it in without leaking. To better understand how it works, imagine an ultra-effective sanitary pad inside your underwear, sandwiched between two layers of fabric.
The crotch area is often quite wide. This cut ensures zero leaks. At the end of the day, you can take off your period underwear and rinse it with water. This flushes out as much menstrual flow as possible from the membrane, then you simply machine wash it with the rest of your laundry. Let it air dry and you can wear it again and again! Menstrual underwear? It's pure happiness!
The best period underwear on the market should be affordable, eco-friendly, reliable, locally made, and healthy. In short, all the qualities you’ll find in Louloucup period panties, period tangas, and Louloucup period shorts!
The ideal period underwear is one you feel good, beautiful, and protected in. The materials should be clean (with Oeko Tex label, organic cotton). The price should be accessible. Above all, the underwear you choose should match your menstrual flow (light, medium, heavy, or very heavy). Louloucup has met the challenge by offering feminine cuts, affordable prices, and high reliability thanks to super-absorbent fabric.
Several obvious reasons will convince you to switch to Louloucup period underwear and ditch tampons and pads:
- For the convenience. You put on your underwear in the morning and don’t take it off until the evening. No more having to change your tampon or pad at regular intervals.
- For your comfort. The Louloucup period underwear is super soft and comfortable. Truly a pleasure to wear. Much more comfortable than a tampon or pad. Plus, thanks to the absorbent fabric with its high absorption capacity, you stay dry for hours.
- For reliability. With the Louloucup menstrual underwear, there’s no risk of leaks or stains. Thanks to its ultra-absorbent fabric, you have nothing to worry about!
- For the planet. With period underwear, you avoid disposable products that add up to a significant amount of polluting waste. Using menstrual underwear is part of a more responsible and environmentally friendly zero-waste approach.
- For your wallet. Period underwear lasts up to 7 years. It quickly pays for itself. You no longer have to buy disposable hygiene products every month, so you save a lot of money.
- For your health. The composition of Louloucup menstrual underwear is safe and harmless for your health. Thanks to its clean fabric, you have nothing to worry about. By staying dry, you avoid odors, bacteria growth, and the risk of toxic shock.
Menstrual panties are easy to care for. Here are some washing and care tips to follow and adopt to extend the life and effectiveness of your period panties:
- After wearing it, it is recommended to rinse the panty thoroughly with cold and clear water.
- You can then machine wash the panty with the rest of your clothes on a short cycle at 30°C or 40°C maximum. Fabric softeners are not recommended. To avoid affecting the absorbent fabrics of the panty, avoid using any overly harsh chemicals. Long and overly hot cycles should also be avoided. To prevent damaging your period underwear in the machine, a laundry bag is a good option.
- Let the panty air dry without using a dryer or radiator.
As you’ve probably gathered, period panties don’t like heat or harsh industrial chemicals and cleaners. Check out our dedicated article on our blog: How to wash your period panties: tips and advice.
We recommend using a non-greasy soap to clean your menstrual panties. Marseille soap or Aleppo soap are not the best choices. In fact, a thin greasy film could build up on the fabric and prevent proper absorption. Fabric softeners or chemical stain removers are also not recommended. Period panties are made of technical fabrics that need special care.
Louloucup offers period underwear from size 34 to size 46, or XS to XXXL, to fit as many women as possible.
Not sure or hesitating? Check out our Size Guide to find the equivalents between Loulou sizes and your hip measurement. If you’re between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size.
If you follow the care instructions, period underwear can last 5 to 7 years (just like regular underwear). Period underwear shows signs of wear when it no longer absorbs menstrual flow as well. That’s when the fabric has lost its absorbency.
The
Clara model
is without a doubt one of the
best absorbent panties on the market. It’s perfect for handling heavy flow,
very heavy flow, or even hemorrhagic flow with no problem. Women
who experience particularly intense and sustained periods, especially due to a
copper IUD or just after giving birth during the postpartum period, will love
slipping on these beautiful high-waisted panties. This model is also ideal
for a good night's sleep without worrying about staining the sheets. The
Clara period panties are a favorite all around.
With an absorption capacity equivalent to 5 tampons, they’re especially suited for central flow thanks to
their extended protection from front to back.

Period panties are a little thicker than regular underwear. However, they feel nothing like a sanitary pad. There is absolutely no "diaper" effect with period panties. Our Louloucup panties are above all very comfortable, and you’ll love putting them on and wearing them. They remain very discreet and thin under clothing.
The ultra-absorbent zone of our panties is made of a fabric that holds blood without swelling. Your comfort is guaranteed while staying dry for a long time! The absorbent area is large. From the front to the back of the panty, you are fully protected. We've combined layers of fabric that are absorbent, breathable, and waterproof. This way, blood is contained—no odor, no dampness, and no leaks!
Our panties are offered and sorted by menstrual flow: light flow, medium flow, and heavy flow.
We recommend choosing several different panties so you can cover your entire period with no problem. If you have a medium flow, the last days of your period are lighter than the first. You’ll need a light flow panty in addition to medium flow panties. Also think about a heavy flow panty for nighttime.
Choose based on your personal tastes and your lifestyle. Do you like lace? Are you sporty? Do you prefer seamless, discreet lingerie? Do you like the tanga style? Shop on our online store!

Ideally, we recommend a set of five panties to be as comfortable as possible during your period. That way, you can switch between styles if you change during the day. You won’t be “stuck” if your previous panty isn’t completely dry after washing. Ultimately, the ideal number of panties depends on your flow and the average length of your cycle. At Loulou, we offer custom sets at discounted prices.
Yes. Our heavy flow underwear can absorb the equivalent of four to five tampons. For example, the Clara model with its double absorption at the crotch is ideal for managing very heavy or hemorrhagic flows. The absorbent protection extends from front to back and goes really high up thanks to its high waist.
Some women are used to wearing a menstrual cup along with the underwear on their heaviest days. It's also a great way to avoid leaks. In addition to period underwear, check out our Loulou menstrual cup collection.
It depends on your flow, but also on the panty's absorbency. A light flow panty holds the equivalent of one to one and a half tampons, while a medium flow panty absorbs up to three tampons’ worth. A heavy flow panty can absorb up to five tampons. Depending on your flow, you can wear your panty all day—up to 12 hours and stay dry.
The best thing you can do is to get to know your menstrual flow so you can assess your needs more accurately. Check out our blog post for help: How to understand your menstrual flow?
Period underwear is a specific type of lingerie you can wear day or night. It’s very practical and reliable. However, it shouldn’t be worn while swimming, as it’s not designed for that. If you like sustainable, hygienic alternatives and want to avoid tampons for your pool session, we recommend trying period swimwear!
The period swim bottom or period swimsuit has, just like period underwear, a highly absorbent membrane. The added benefit of period swimwear? Its outer waterproof layer. The period swimsuit manages to be absorbent inside and waterproof outside. It captures and locks in menstrual flow (from light to normal) very efficiently and without leaks, making it perfect for the pool or beach!
Use & Care
All women, without exception! Teenagers experiencing their first periods, working women, pregnant women, new mothers in postpartum, or women in perimenopause. At every stage of life, menstrual panties—absorbent and comfortable—are a true support and ally. Period panties are also practical and welcome for spotting or other discharge and secretions. This way, you can avoid disposable liners. Menstrual panties can also be used for light urinary leaks.
Check out our article on the topic: Are menstrual panties a good idea for managing light flows and spotting?
Yes, absolutely. We recommend a panty for heavy flow in this case. That way, you’re fully protected. You can sleep peacefully without worrying about staining your sheets or pajamas. Heavy-flow period panties offer extra-high protection at the front and back. So you can sleep on your stomach with no problem.

Depending on the model, you'll also find plumetis, cotton, or even nylon. You can find detailed compositions for each panty on their product page.
All our fabrics are regularly tested by independent laboratories to ensure they are non-toxic. This way, we guarantee period underwear made from fabrics free of toxic residues.
Eighty percent of our underwear is made in Europe. Our main production center is in Portugal. In rare cases, we manufacture certain specific models (like the Clara high-waisted double-absorption underwear) in China. The manufacturing workshop is audited and holds ISO 9001 or BSCI certifications.
