The essentials of period panties
Learn everything about period panties, the underwear that holds menstrual flow without leaks during your period. You can also check out our Complete Period Panty Guide for even more information and tips.
Menstrual panties look a lot like regular underwear. They’re just as pretty and always a pleasure to wear! The main difference is the absorbent membrane sewn into the core between the inner and outer fabrics. This membrane is dense, wide and made from technical fabrics and materials with a very high absorption capacity.
Thanks to this membrane, period panties hold your menstrual flow, capturing and locking it in without saturating. To better understand how they work, imagine a super-effective pad built into your panties, sandwiched between two layers of fabric.
The gusset is often quite wide. This cut guarantees zero leaks. At the end of the day, you can take off your period panties and rinse them in water. This flushes out as much menstrual blood as possible from the membrane, then you simply pop them in the washing machine with the rest of your laundry. Let them air-dry and you can wear them again and again! Menstrual panties? They’re pure joy!
Several obvious reasons will convince you to switch to Louloucup menstrual panties and ditch tampons and sanitary pads:
- For convenience. You put your panties on in the morning and only take them off at night. You no longer have to change your tampon or pad at regular intervals.
- For comfort. Louloucup period panties are very soft and very comfortable. A real pleasure to wear. Much more comfortable than a tampon or a sanitary pad. Plus, thanks to the absorbent fabric with its very high absorption capacity, you stay dry for several hours.
- For reliability. With Louloucup menstrual panties, there’s no risk of leaks or stains. Thanks to their ultra-absorbent fabric, there’s nothing to worry about!
- For the planet. With period panties, you avoid disposable products that generate a significant amount of polluting waste. Using menstrual panties is therefore part of a more responsible, more environmentally friendly zero-waste approach.
- For your wallet. Period panties have a lifespan of around 7 years. Their cost is quickly recouped. You no longer need to buy new disposable period products every month, so you save a lot of money.
- For your health. Louloucup menstrual panties are made from materials that are safe and harmless to your health. Thanks to their clean fabric composition, you have nothing to worry about. By staying dry, you avoid odors, bacterial growth, and the risk of toxic shock syndrome.
Period panties are easy to care for. Here are a few washing and care tips to follow and adopt to extend the life and effectiveness of your period underwear:
- After wearing, we recommend rinsing the panty thoroughly in clear, cold water.
- You can then machine-wash it with the rest of your clothes on a short cycle at 30°C or 40°C maximum. Fabric softeners are not recommended. To avoid damaging the absorbent fabrics in the panty, do not use harsh chemical products. Long, hot cycles should also be avoided. To protect your period underwear in the machine, a laundry bag is a good option.
- Dry your panty in the open air, without using a tumble dryer or radiator.
As you’ve probably gathered, period underwear doesn’t like heat or harsh, chemical detergents. Check out our dedicated blog post for more details: How to wash your period underwear: tips and advice.
We recommend using a non-greasy soap to wash your period panties. Marseille soap or Aleppo soap are not the best options. They leave a thin greasy film on the fabric which can affect absorbency. Fabric softeners or chemical stain removers are also not recommended. Period panties are made from technical fabrics that need special care.
Louloucup offers menstrual panties from size 34 to size 46, that is from XS to XXXL, to cater to as many women as possible.
Not sure which size to choose? Check out our Size guide to find the equivalence between Loulou sizes and your hip measurement. If you’re hesitating between two sizes, we recommend going for the larger one.
If you follow the care instructions properly, menstrual panties have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years (similar to regular panties). Menstrual panties start to show signs of wear when they no longer absorb period blood as well. The fabrics have then lost their absorbency.
The
Clara style
is without a doubt one of the
best absorbent period panties on the market. It handles
heavy flow, very heavy flow and even
hemorrhagic flow with no problem at all. Women who
experience particularly intense and prolonged periods,
especially due to a copper IUD or just after giving
birth during the postpartum period, will love slipping
on these beautiful high‑waisted panties. This style is also ideal for a
good night’s sleep without worrying about staining the sheets. The
Clara period panties are a clear favorite.
With an absorbency equivalent to 5 tampons, they are especially good
at managing a central flow thanks to their extended
protection from front to back.

Period panties are a little thicker than regular underwear. However, the feeling is nothing like wearing a pad. There is absolutely no “diaper” effect with period panties. Our Louloucup panties are above all very comfortable and you’ll genuinely enjoy putting them on and wearing them. They remain very discreet and thin under clothing.
The ultra-absorbent area of our panties is made from a fabric that holds blood without swelling. You stay comfortable and dry for hours! The absorbent zone is large. From the front to the back of the panty, you’re fully protected. We’ve combined layers of fabrics that are absorbent, breathable and waterproof. This way, blood is contained with no odor, no dampness and no leaks!
Our panties are offered and categorized by menstrual flow: light flow, medium flow and heavy flow.
We recommend choosing several different panties so you can easily cover your entire period. If you have a medium flow, the last days of your period are lighter than the first. You’ll then need a light-flow panty as well as medium-flow panties. Also think about a heavy-flow panty for nighttime.
Choose above all according to your personal taste, but also your lifestyle. Do you love lace? Are you sporty? Do you prefer seamless, discreet lingerie? Do you like a thong cut? Go shopping on our online store!

Ideally, we recommend a set of five panties so you can feel as comfortable as possible throughout your period. That way you can switch styles if you change during the day. You also won’t be “stuck” if your previous panty isn’t completely dry yet after washing. Ultimately, the ideal number of panties depends on your flow and the average length of your period. At Loulou, we offer custom sets at discounted prices.
Yes. Our heavy-flow panties have an absorbency capacity of four to five tampons. For example, the Clara model, with its double absorbent layer at the crotch, is ideal for managing very heavy or hemorrhagic flow. The absorbent protection extends from front to back and rises very high thanks to its high waist.
Some women are used to wearing, on their heaviest days, a menstrual cup in addition to their panties. This is also an excellent way to avoid any leaks. In addition to period panties, check out our range of Loulou menstrual cups.
It depends on your flow, but also on the absorbency level of the panty. A light-flow panty holds the equivalent of one to one and a half tampons, while a medium-flow panty absorbs the equivalent of three tampons. A heavy-flow panty absorbs up to five tampons. Depending on your flow, you can wear your panty all day, up to 12 hours, and stay dry.
The best thing is to learn how to recognise your menstrual flow so you can assess your needs more precisely. Check out our blog article to help you, How to know your menstrual flow?
Period panties are a specific type of lingerie that you can wear both day and night. They’re very practical and very reliable. However, they can’t be worn for swimming, as they’re not designed for that. If you like sustainable, hygienic alternatives and want to avoid tampons for your pool session, we recommend trying a menstrual swimsuit!
The menstrual bikini bottom or period swimsuit has, just like period panties, a highly absorbent layer. The extra benefit of a menstrual swimsuit? Its waterproof outer layer. A period swimsuit manages to be absorbent on the inside and waterproof on the outside. It captures and locks in light to normal menstrual flow very effectively and without leaks, making it perfect for the pool or the beach!
Use & Care
Absolutely everyone! Teenagers getting their first periods, busy women, pregnant women, new moms in full postpartum, or perimenopausal women. At every stage of life, menstrual panties, absorbent and comfortable, are real support and a true ally. Period panties are also very practical and welcome for spotting or other discharge and secretions. This way you can avoid disposable panty liners. Menstrual panties can also be used in cases of light urinary leakage.
