What is a heavy flow?

Before going any further, it's good to know your menstrual flow and what it's like. Light, medium, or heavy—it's helpful to identify it so you can choose the most suitable period panties.

A menstrual flow is considered heavy when it exceeds 80 ml. To give you an idea, a menstrual cup can hold up to 25 ml of blood. Periods are also considered heavy when they last for more than 7 consecutive days.

To help you estimate your flow and how heavy your bleeding is, pay attention to how you use period products. How many tampons do you use in a day? Do you have to change your protection very frequently to stay dry and comfortable? About every two hours? Do you notice any blood clots on your pad or in your cup? Do you often end up with pads that leak or are saturated?

These are all clues that can help you figure out if you have a heavy or even hemorrhagic flow. While very light periods are called oligomenorrhea, heavy periods are referred to by doctors as menorrhagia.
