A few weeks ago, we discussed at Loulou the topic of light menstrual flow and the incredibly practical use of menstrual thongs in that specific case.

Today, we wanted to talk with you about heavy bleeding. Because we know that, for many reasons, many women experience heavy periods, particularly intense, very heavy, and abnormally strong menstruation.

Not always easy to manage, day or night, at work, at school, during sports, or at home, these menstrual flows and bleeding are cumbersome and disabling in daily life.

So, can washable period panties or washable period underwear really be effective against a heavy bleeding?
Is the fabric absorbent enough to capture menstrual blood without leaking? Is a heavy flow period panty as discreet as the models for light flow, a disposable tampon, or a classic sanitary pad?

Let’s take stock together. And along the way, discover our favorite models and menstrual products for heavy bleeding that keep you dry, leak-free, and finally at ease.

What is very heavy menstrual bleeding?

Before going any further, it’s good to know your menstrual flow and its nature. Light, medium, heavy, or hemorrhagic, it’s useful to recognize it in order to choose the most suitable period panties.

A period panty should first and foremost be chosen according to how heavy your menstrual flow is.

How is very heavy menstrual bleeding defined?

A menstrual flow is considered hemorrhagic when it exceeds 80 ml. To give you an idea, a menstrual cup can hold up to 25 ml of blood. We also talk about heavy bleeding when it lasts more than 7 consecutive days.

How do you know if you have very heavy periods?

To help you estimate your flow and the intensity of your bleeding, observe your use of sanitary protections. How many tampons do you use in a day? Do you need to change your protections very regularly to stay dry and comfortable? About every two hours? Do you notice blood clots on your pad or in your cup? Do you often find yourself with overflowing, saturated pads?

All these signs can help you know if you have heavy bleeding. While very light menstrual bleeding is called oligomenorrhea, heavy bleeding is medically referred to as menorrhagia.

Why are you experiencing heavy bleeding?

Many different reasons and causes can explain a particularly heavy menstrual flow.

You can have heavy periods because of your contraception. The copper IUD or copper intrauterine device is a very practical and highly effective contraceptive method but has the rather unpleasant side effect of causing longer, heavier, and more exhausting periods. This is obviously not always the case and tends to ease several months after insertion.

You may also have heavier-than-average periods if you have endometriosis.

You may experience very heavy periods if you have a fibroid or polyps.

Hemorrhagic periods can also be a consequence of a hormonal imbalance.

Polyps, endometriosis, fibroids—whatever the cause! It’s necessary to consult and not let this situation drag on. Midwife, general practitioner, or gynecologist, make an appointment! It’s important to know why you have heavy bleeding. Treatments and options always exist. You don’t have to endure such unpleasant and hard-to-bear periods every month. Stay strong! đŸ©”

Focus on
 lochia

We couldn’t talk about heavy bleeding without mentioning lochia!

Period panties and menstrual lingerie in general are a great support, not only during your period. Heavy bleeding period panties are especially suitable for managing and absorbing periods but also lochia.

Lochia, those well-known intense bleedings, are familiar to new mothers in the postpartum period. Lochia are blood loss and residues that could not be expelled at the time of delivery. It is therefore normal and natural for the body to eliminate them. Afterpains (contractions after delivery) help with better evacuation.

To manage this postpartum period as smoothly as possible, discover the Louloucup postpartum panties collection. It’s a selection of washable, reusable panties that are absorbent and comfortable to cope with even the heaviest bleeding.
