How do I insert my Louloucup menstrual cup?
- STERILIZE. We recommend sterilizing your menstrual cup at the start of each new menstrual cycle. To do this, you can use our sterilizer, or simply boil your cup for 5 minutes on the stove or in the microwave. You can find step-by-step instructions here: Cup Sterilizer – 2 Ways to Sterilize Your Cup. There’s also a super convenient pack with cup + sterilizer at the best price.
- WASH. Make sure your hands are clean before insertion. Use lukewarm water and a mild soap to wash your hands and your menstrual cup.
- FOLD. With clean hands and cup, you can fold your menstrual cup using your favorite method. Several folds are possible: the C-fold, 7-fold, or tulip fold. If it’s your first time, feel free to try different folds to find the one that’s most comfortable for your body.
- INSERT. Choose the position you’re most comfortable in: on the toilet, in the shower, squatting, or with one leg raised on the toilet seat. You need to be relaxed. Then gently insert your folded cup into your vagina.
- RELEASE. The cup unfolds and adheres to your vaginal wall once you let go. It’s then perfectly positioned to collect your period blood. You shouldn’t feel any discomfort, pain, or irritation.
- CHECK that your menstrual cup is positioned correctly. Run a finger around the rim of your cup to make sure it’s fully open. You shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort.
How do I remove my Louloucup menstrual cup?
- WASH your hands. Just like with insertion, it’s important to always handle your menstrual cup with clean hands.
- RELAX. If you’re tense, it’s harder to remove your cup because your muscles will be more contracted.
- INSERT your fingers into your vagina to locate the base of the menstrual cup. If you can't reach it, gently pull on the stem until you feel the base. Once you feel the base, pinch it to break the suction seal.
- If your menstrual cup has moved up, use the stem to gently guide it back down to the entrance of your vagina. You can then pinch the base of the cup to break the seal. However, never remove your menstrual cup by pulling only on the stem.
- If your menstrual cup is positioned very high and you’re having trouble reaching it, use your vaginal muscles to push it down. Do this gently, gradually, and without causing any pain.
- Gently pull your menstrual cup from one side and then the other as you slowly remove it.
- EMPTY your menstrual cup into the sink, toilet, or shower.
- RINSE AND STERILIZE. Use cold water and a gentle soap to rinse your cup. If you’re at the end of your period, you can sterilize it.
- STORE your cup in its cotton pouch until next use, protected from dust.
General instructions for the Louloucup menstrual cup
- Always wash your hands before handling your menstrual cup.
- To avoid any risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), don’t wear your menstrual cup for more than 6 hours at a time.
- Before inserting, make sure your menstrual cup is clean. The four holes on the cup’s rim should be thoroughly cleaned and clear.
- To prevent stains on your menstrual cup, rinse it with clear, cold water. Avoid using chemical products, household cleaners, or white vinegar.
- You don’t need to remove your menstrual cup to use the bathroom.
- You must always remove your menstrual cup before having sexual intercourse.
- Likewise, Louloucup is not a contraceptive and does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. The Loulou cup is simply an intimate and hygienic solution for your period.
- Don't use your Louloucup during the postpartum period to collect postnatal blood. Heavy flow period underwear is recommended in this case. Always consult your OB-GYN or midwife before using your cup again after giving birth. If you haven't already, check out our super absorbent postpartum period underwear, ultra-comfortable and reliable period panties for very heavy or hemorrhagic menstrual flow.
- Don’t wait until your menstrual cup is full to empty it. Empty and rinse your cup regularly (ideally every 4 hours) to stay as comfortable as possible.
- If you have gynecological issues, always consult your gynecologist before using a menstrual cup. Their advice and approval are important to ensure you have the best possible experience.
- We recommend not using a menstrual cup at night. The best alternative? Period underwear. This washable and sustainable protection, just like the cup, is super reliable for nighttime use. No risk of leaks or stains on your pajamas or sheets. Still have doubts? We've already shown you that using the cup during the day and period underwear at night is an excellent zero-waste period routine!
- If you can, we recommend having two cups and alternating them, so you always use a clean cup. With two menstrual cups, you have time to thoroughly clean the one you just used and rotate them. It's more practical and more hygienic.
Menstrual cup stem and positions
The Loulou menstrual cup is positioned differently depending on each woman’s anatomy. No matter the position, a cup should never hurt, cause pain, or feel uncomfortable.
For some people, the cup will stay in a low position, near the entrance of the vagina. The stem may stick out a bit. That’s not a problem. If it’s uncomfortable, you can always trim or adjust the stem. To do this, remove your menstrual cup and cut the stem with disinfected scissors.
For some women, the menstrual cup may sit higher inside. This is normal and nothing to worry about. The stem of the cup is there to help you reach the cup more easily when it’s time to remove it. By gently pulling on the stem, you can reach the rounded base, pinch it, and break the suction seal.
If the cup sits even higher, you’ll need to push it down to the lower part of your vagina using your muscles. Contract your abs and pelvic floor to gently lower the menstrual cup so you can reach it with your fingers.
