Everything you need to know about postpartum

So what exactly is postpartum?

This is a period a woman goes through after giving birth. The body is shaken up by the experience. Hormones, weight, healing, breastfeeding, postpartum bleeding, baby, baby blues—a new mom faces a lot of upheaval and all kinds of challenges she’d never encountered before giving birth. It can be confusing or even overwhelming at times. But above all, it’s normal. So don’t panic or feel guilty.

How long does postpartum last?

It’s often said that postpartum is like a “fourth trimester.” Others describe it as nine months or even 40 days. Postpartum is different for every woman. It can be a bit of a chaotic time (though not always), when you return home, meet your baby, and begin this new life together.

Postpartum: hormonal upheaval and the baby blues

Emotionally, new moms might go through a few tough days. Feeling sensitive, overwhelmed, or tired, it’s not surprising to tear up easily or get irritated quickly. Accept your emotions fully and without guilt. Your hormones are putting you through it—it’s normal to feel intense emotions!

Some women may experience baby blues. It's neither taboo nor shameful. This rather tough period when you don't feel up to it is only temporary, so don't worry.

And what about your body in all this?

Your body, which just brought a baby into the world, is sore, tired, and exhausted. Be patient with yourself! It will take time to regain your strength and energy. One step at a time. For now, you need to recover. If you had a vaginal delivery, you may have had an episiotomy. If you had a C-section, healing can be painful and take time.

New moms can experience urinary leaks, as well as constipation, hemorrhoids, or bleeding. It’s also normal to lose some blood. This isn’t your period, but rather lochia. And to help with this, the Louloucup postpartum underwear collection is absolutely perfect!

Period underwear for a more peaceful postpartum experience

Lochia

Lochia refers to the bleeding and other vaginal discharge that follows childbirth. Your uterus and vagina are expelling any leftover material that didn’t come out during delivery. This is a normal, natural process. These often heavy discharges can, however, last quite a while—sometimes several weeks.

Afterpains, contractions and postpartum cramps help the uterus return to its normal size. With afterpains, lochia appears. Lochia is usually quite heavy and is a sign that the uterus is healing and everything is returning to place. The area where the placenta was attached is healing. A certain amount of blood and tissue is expelled. Lochia consists of blood, clots, and sometimes remnants of placenta. Its color and consistency change over the days, ranging from pink to red, brown, and finally white.

The "mini period" after childbirth

After lochia, there’s another period of discharge. Light bleeding due to the hormonal drop can occur for several days. The real return of periods only happens after several weeks. If the mother is breastfeeding, her periods are paused (lactational amenorrhea). If she’s not breastfeeding, menstruation returns six to eight weeks after giving birth. Periods return even faster after a cesarean.

Light bladder leaks

Mild urinary leaks can occur after childbirth, which is also known as postpartum incontinence. The pelvic floor muscles are no longer able to hold the bladder.

After giving birth, new moms have a stretched perineum and weakened pelvic muscles. Pelvic floor rehabilitation as well as abdominal rehab are important to strengthen these weakened muscles. While waiting for the rehab to take effect, a Louloucup leak-proof underwear will save the day!
