Everything you need to know about postpartum
What exactly is the postpartum period?
This is a period a woman goes through after giving birth. The body is shaken up by this event. Hormones, weight, healing, breastfeeding, return of periods, baby, baby blues — a new mum faces many upheavals and a whole host of challenges she never encountered before giving birth. It can be unsettling or even anxiety-inducing at times. But above all, it’s normal. So no panic and no guilt.
How long does postpartum last?
People often say postpartum is like a fourth trimester. Others talk about 9 months or even 40 days. Postpartum varies from woman to woman. It’s a somewhat chaotic period (though not always), of coming home, meeting your baby and getting this new life with your little one underway.
Postpartum: hormonal roller coaster and baby blues
Psychologically, the young mother may experience a few challenging days. Emotional, overwhelmed, or tired, it's not surprising to feel tearful or easily irritated. Accept your emotions fully and without guilt. Your hormones are affecting you, it's normal to feel strong emotions!
Some women may experience and go through the baby blues. It's neither taboo nor shameful. This rather difficult period where you don't feel up to it is only temporary, rest assured.
And what about your body in all this?
Your woman’s body that has just brought a baby into the world is bruised, tired and exhausted. Be patient with it! It will take time to regain your tone and energy. One step at a time. For now, you need to recover.
If you gave birth vaginally, you may have had an episiotomy. If you had a C-section, healing can be painful and take time.
A new mum may experience bladder leaks, but also constipation, haemorrhoids or bleeding. It’s also normal for you to lose blood. These are not periods, but lochia. And to cope with them, the Louloucup postpartum underwear collection is absolutely perfect!

Period underwear for a calmer postpartum
Lochia
Lochia refers to the bleeding and other vulvar discharge that follow childbirth. Your uterus and vagina expel the residue that didn’t come out during delivery. It’s a normal, natural process. These quite heavy discharges can, however, last for some time and continue for several weeks.
Afterpains, or post‑birth contractions and cramps, help the uterus return to its normal size. This is when lochia appears. Lochia is often quite heavy and is a sign that the uterus is healing and everything is returning to normal. The area where the placenta was attached is healing. A certain amount of blood and tissue is therefore expelled. Lochia is made up of blood, clots and bits of placenta. From pink to red, then brown and finally white, both the colour and consistency of lochia change over the days.
The mini return of your period after childbirth
After lochia, there is another period of discharge. Light bleeding caused by the drop in hormones can occur for several days. Your actual return of your period only happens several weeks later. If the mother is breastfeeding, her period is put on hold (lactational amenorrhea). If she is not breastfeeding, menstruation usually returns six to eight weeks after giving birth. Periods tend to return even sooner after a C-section.
Minor urinary leaks
Light urinary leaks can occur after childbirth; this is known as postpartum incontinence. The pelvic floor muscles can no longer properly support the bladder.
After giving birth, a new mum has a stretched pelvic floor and weakened pelvic muscles. Pelvic floor and abdominal rehabilitation are important to strengthen these weakened muscles. While you’re waiting for the rehab to take effect, a Louloucup anti-leak panty for urinary incontinence will save the day!

Postpartum lingerie
To avoid any risk of infection, disposable tampons are a strict no-go after childbirth, and so is the menstrual cup. All internal period and hygiene products are off-limits. That’s why menstrual panties make excellent post-partum intimate protection and are perfectly suited to this particular time.
