Help, my menstrual cup is full. What do I do?
Some women feel hesitant about using a cup. Yet the menstrual cup is a healthy, eco-friendly and economical alternative. This small bell-shaped silicone cup is the ideal solution to replace your tampons and pads.
Throughout the day, in class, at work, at home, at the gym or at the pool, the cup stands out as a reliable, discreet and comfortable intimate hygiene product. Affordable and easy to use, it offers many advantages, just like period underwear.
Let’s tackle a very specific situation together today: what should you do when your cup is full? Having a full cup can be uncomfortable and stressful. Fear of leaks, fear of stains. What’s the right thing to do?
Instructions for use: full menstrual cup
Step 1 - Remove the menstrual cup
You’ve been wearing your cup for several hours and you have a heavy or very heavy flow? It’s time to remove and empty it. It couldn’t be simpler. Go somewhere calm, wash your hands with soap and get into the same position you used when inserting your cup.
Removing it is very simple:
- You push using your pelvic floor muscles.
- Gently pull on the cup’s stem to bring it down.
- Grab the base and pinch it gently.
- Gently tilt the cup, moving it from side to side.
- You empty the blood into the toilet.
Step 2 – Clean the menstrual cup
Once you’ve completed step 1, you now need to clean your menstrual cup. It must be thoroughly washed with clear water and soap without alcohol, or with your own intimate wash.
Be careful not to clean your LoulouCup in the washing machine or with dish soap, you risk damaging it. Just like menstrual panties, menstrual cups deserve a rigorous but always gentle wash with products that are not too chemical or aggressive.
Step 3: Reinsert the menstrual cup
Your menstrual cup is emptied and cleaned? You can put it back in and be protected again for several hours in a row. Now it’s your turn to reposition your menstrual cup. To do this, you need to:
- Fold your cup however you like: in a 7 fold, tulip fold or C fold.
- Position yourself however you like: squatting, with one foot on the toilet, or sitting down.
- Gently separate your labia and insert the folded cup at the entrance of your vagina. Push it in far enough so it doesn’t stick out, then release it so it can open and rest against your vaginal walls.
- Your cup is in the right position when you can’t feel it. All good? You’re set for several hours of peace of mind.

Don’t hesitate to wrap your first menstrual cup in toilet paper and place it in a reusable pouch or directly in its box to be sterilized. You can clean it when you get home.
If you’re at the office, at work or out running errands and you’ve forgotten your second menstrual cup, take a bottle of water with you when you go to the bathroom. You can use this water to rinse your cup and your hands.
Never wear your cup for more than six consecutive hours. We strongly recommend wearing period panties at night. Several super comfortable and ultra-absorbent styles are available on the Louloucup shop!
Tips to keep your cup from overflowing
Find the right size
To avoid your menstrual cup filling up too quickly, you need to choose the right size. That’s actually the first step when picking your cup. Choosing the wrong size can potentially cause leaks. Louloucup offers two cup sizes: a larger medium size and a smaller size small.
Size S
Size S is used for light to normal flows and/or by people who have never given birth vaginally.
Size M
Size M is used for heavy flows and/or for people who have given birth vaginally.
This means that if your flow is light and you gave birth vaginally, it’s best to choose size Medium. In addition to sizes, at Louloucup we offer two levels of softness:
- The blue menstrual cup is softer and perfect for young women with a smaller vagina.
- The pink menstrual cup is firmer and is suitable for women with a stronger pelvic floor.
Wearing period panties
For every problem, Louloucup has a solution. In general, it takes a little time to learn how to use your cup and to figure out when your menstrual cup is full.
As a precaution, and to avoid staining your favourite underwear, we recommend using a combo: cup plus period underwear. In that case, you can go for an absorbent, sexy period thong, which protects you from any nasty surprises or stains!
