Sizes, tests, reviews, composition, benefits, how it works, how to use it—if you want maximum information, check out our super comprehensive guide to Louloucup’s organic, French-made menstrual cups.
How do I insert my Louloucup menstrual cup?
- STERILIZE. We recommend sterilizing your menstrual cup at the start of each new cycle. To do this, you can use our sterilizer or boil your cup for 5 minutes in a saucepan or in the microwave. You can find the step-by-step guide here: Cup sterilizer: 2 ways to sterilize your cup. You can also get a super handy bundle with a cup + sterilizer at the best price.
- WASH. Make sure your hands are very clean before insertion. Use lukewarm water and a mild soap to wash your hands as well as your menstrual cup.
- **FOLD.** Your cup and hands are clean, so you can now fold the menstrual cup using your favorite folding method. Several folds are possible: the C-fold, the 7-fold or the tulip fold. If it’s your first time, don’t hesitate to try several folds to find the one that best suits your **intimate area**.
- INSERT. Choose the position in which you feel most comfortable: on the toilet, in the shower, squatting or with one leg raised on the toilet seat. You need to be relaxed. Then gently insert your folded cup into your vagina.
- RELEASE. The cup opens up and seals against your vaginal wall once you let go. The cup is then correctly positioned to collect the blood from your period. It should not bother you, hurt you, or feel uncomfortable.
- CHECK that your menstrual cup is positioned correctly. Run a finger around the rim of your cup to make sure it has fully opened. You shouldn’t feel any pain or tension.
How do I remove my Louloucup menstrual cup?
- Always wash your hands. Just like for insertion, it’s important to handle your menstrual cup only with clean hands.
- RELAX. A tense person will have more difficulty removing their cup because the muscles will be more contracted.
- INSERT your fingers into your vagina to locate the base of the menstrual cup. If you can't reach it, gently pull on the stem until you feel the base of the cup. When you feel the base of the cup, pinch the bottom to break the suction.
- If your menstrual cup has moved up, use the stem to gently bring the cup back down to the entrance of your vagina. You can then pinch the base of the cup to break the suction seal. However, never remove your menstrual cup by pulling on the stem alone.
- If your menstrual cup sits very high and you’re struggling to reach it, gently push it down using your vaginal muscles to bring it lower. Do this slowly, carefully and without pain.
- GENTLY PULL your menstrual cup from one side and then the other while slowly removing it
- EMPTY your menstrual cup into the sink, toilet or shower.
- RINSE AND STERILIZE. Use cold water and a mild soap to rinse your cup. At the end of your period, you can sterilize it.
- STORE your cup in its cotton pouch until next use, protected from dust.
General instructions for using the Louloucup menstrual cup
- Always wash your hands before handling your menstrual cup.
- To avoid any risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), don’t wear your menstrual cup for more than 6 consecutive hours.
- Before inserting, make sure your menstrual cup is perfectly clean. The four holes on the side of your cup must be thoroughly cleaned and clear.
- To avoid stains on your menstrual cup, rinse it with clear, cold water. Above all, avoid chemical products and cleaners, household detergents, or white vinegar.
- You don’t need to remove your menstrual cup to go to the bathroom.
- You must remove your menstrual cup before having sexual intercourse.
- Likewise, Louloucup is not a contraceptive and does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections. The Loulou cup is simply an intimate, hygienic solution for your period.
- Do not use your Louloucup during the postpartum period to collect postnatal blood. In this case, we recommend heavy-flow period panties. Always seek advice and get approval from your gynecologist or midwife before using your cup again after childbirth. If you haven’t yet, discover our super-absorbent postpartum period panties, period panties designed for very heavy or hemorrhagic menstrual flow that are ultra-comfortable and reliable.
- Don’t wait until your menstrual cup is full to empty it. Empty and rinse your cup regularly (ideally every 4 hours) so you can feel as comfortable as possible.
- If you have any gynaecological issues, always talk to your gynaecologist before using a menstrual cup. Their advice and approval are important so you can have the best possible experience.
- We recommend not using a menstrual cup at night. The best alternative? Period panties. Just like the cup, this washable, long-lasting menstrual protection is super reliable at night. No risk of leaks or stains on your pajamas or sheets. Still unsure? We’ve already shown you that using a cup during the day and period panties at night is an excellent zero-waste period routine!
- If you can, we recommend having two cups and alternating them so you’re always using a perfectly clean cup. By having two menstrual cups, you have time to properly clean the one you’ve just used and rotate them. It’s more practical and more hygienic.
Stem and positions of the menstrual cup
The Loulou menstrual cup sits differently depending on each woman’s anatomy. Whatever the position, a cup should never hurt, cause pain, or feel uncomfortable.
For some, the cup will sit in a low position, near the entrance of the vagina. The stem may then stick out a little. That doesn’t matter. If it bothers you, you can always trim or adjust the stem. To do this, remove your menstrual cup and cut the stem with disinfected scissors.
For some women, the menstrual cup can move higher up inside. This is normal and nothing to worry about. In this case, the stem of the cup helps you reach it more easily when removing it. By gently pulling on the stem, you can reach the rounded base of the cup, then pinch it to release the suction.
If the cup has moved even higher, you’ll need to push it down into your vagina using your muscles. Contract your abs and pelvic floor to gently bring the menstrual cup down so you can reach it with your fingers.
