In the middle of the postpartum period, it’s important to be able to rely on certain essentials. Intimate postpartum protection is without a doubt one of those must-haves you shouldn’t compromise on!
Because the discharge following childbirth is intense, it's important to be well-equipped. The arrival of a baby at home and in your life is quite overwhelming, so planning and anticipating some practical details is always a good idea. Today, let's talk together about which postpartum protection to choose.
Special disposable maternity pads or ultra-absorbent period panties – let’s break it all down together to find the best lingerie for new mums.

The period after childbirth is a wonderful time in life: the mother–child bond is being formed. However, the body, weakened and sore from giving birth, is exhausted. Hormonal changes, sleepless nights, healing and, for those who choose it, the start of breastfeeding are all factors that can make this period particularly challenging both mentally and physically.
In short, the first days, weeks and months are unsettling, exhausting and draining, but also magical and unique!
If this is not (fortunately) always the case, baby blues can occur postpartum. If this state of sadness and weariness passes, then it is nothing serious. It's rather normal, after all, given the hormonal rollercoaster. However, if this state persists over time, it is referred to as postpartum depression. It is essential to talk about it, to surround yourself well, and to seek the necessary help. Becoming a mother is learned. And it's not always easy! Motherhood is a great adventure that should not be solo. Choosing the right allies to live it is therefore very natural and very important.
When the time is right and always with your doctor’s, midwife’s or gynecologist’s approval, getting back to gentle exercise or physical activity is essential. It helps you reconnect with your body, tone up again, regain strength and clear your head. An appropriate sport is highly recommended.
This activity must of course be done safely, with no focus on performance, purely for enjoyment. Pilates, yoga, walking or similar activities can be resumed after pelvic floor rehab and abdominal rehab.
We’ve already discussed this topic on our blog. Here are two articles where we talked about sport, new mums and period panties:
Exercising after childbirth has many benefits: letting off steam, release, well-being, relaxation. Before you even feel better in your body, you’ll feel much better in your head. And of course, it helps break up the routine and clear your mind. You gradually regain confidence in your body. Your muscles wake up. And you can start—if you wish—waging war on those lingering pregnancy kilos.
Postpartum underwear must above all be comfortable. Soft and pleasant to wear, post-birth lingerie must also of course be reliable and effective at absorbing heavy discharge.
After giving birth, new mums experience particularly heavy discharge known as lochia. This is blood and uterine debris (clots and bits of placenta) that were not expelled during delivery.
This discharge, which can be quite impressive in both volume and texture, can last for several days or even several weeks. Lochia are expelled thanks to post-birth uterine contractions, known as afterpains.
After the lochia, much lighter spotting appears, known as the mini return of periods. This bleeding is caused by the drop in hormones.
So as you can see, it’s essential to be properly equipped to get through this particularly intense time as smoothly as possible. There are three types of post-birth protection to choose from:
We strongly recommend combining these three types of protection depending on how heavy your flow is.
Disposable postpartum panties or disposable maternity panties are the intimate, hygienic protection we recommend right after birth. Lochia in the first few days after your baby is born is very heavy. You therefore need super-absorbent postpartum protection.
Next, as a second step, you can wear disposable pads. These are special pads. They differ from standard period pads because they are much wider, thicker and longer.
⚠︎Always choose pads with a clean composition, free from bleaching agents and chlorine.
You can also wear period panties designed for very heavy or hemorrhagic flows. Thanks to their very high absorption level, these menstrual undies can easily handle postpartum discharge, light spotting when your period returns, as well as your first full period after birth.
One major advantage of period panties is that they’re washable. You can use them again and again throughout your postpartum. It’s an excellent investment.
Always opt for heavy-flow period panties with wide, extended coverage that comes up high at the front and back. Pay attention to the composition and prioritize natural, organic materials such as organic cotton, which is incredibly soft and gentle on your intimate area. The Mathilde heavy-flow period panty and the Jade heavy-flow period panty are, for example, lined with organic cotton and have a capacity equivalent to 5 tampons.
Throughout your postpartum, it’s really reassuring to rely on high-quality, effective, and dependable lingerie. It’s one less mental load to carry. No need to spend your day running to the bathroom. No reason to stress or worry. You’re protected.
