Is a menstrual panty for light flow and spotting a good idea?
While some women experience heavy periods, very heavy or even hemorrhagic bleeding, others have light periods with a relatively light menstrual flow.
Bleeding outside your period is also common. Not to mention vaginal discharge and other secretions that every woman may experience throughout her life.
What are the best washable period products to stay dry while avoiding those infamous chemical, harmful, polluting and disposable panty liners?
Louloucup is shining a spotlight today on period panties for a light menstrual flow. You’ll quickly see that these absorbent underwear (panties, thongs and menstrual tangas) aren’t just for the first and last days of your period and can actually be really useful!
What is a light menstrual flow?
Before going any further, it’s important to know your menstrual flow. It’s generally accepted that a light menstrual flow corresponds to less than 30 ml of blood over the whole period.
At the other end of the scale, for very heavy flows, you’re over 80 ml. To give you an idea, a menstrual cup can hold up to 25 ml of blood.
Good to know: during the bleeding phase (on average 3 to 5 days), your flow can be regular or irregular. Generally, day 2 and day 3 are the heaviest.
For others, however, the flow is slower and spread over 4 days, for example. It’s important to observe your cycle and know your flow in order to choose the period protection that best suits your needs.
You can consider your menstrual flow light if:
- if you notice that your discharge is infrequent and really light,
- if you don’t need to change your period protection regularly and can keep it on for a long time (a tampon that’s barely soaked, barely stained after a whole day).
By the way, low-volume menstrual bleeding is called oligomenorrhea in medical terms.

A short glossary of the different menstrual disorders or period‑related irregularities:
- oligomenorrhea: scanty or infrequent periods;
- Menorrhagia: the opposite of oligomenorrhea, periods that are too heavy;
- amenorrhoea: absence of periods;
- dysmenorrhea: experiencing pain during your period;
- spaniomenorrhea: a cycle longer than the average accepted (more than 35 days);
- polymenorrhea: a cycle that is shorter than average and therefore more frequent;
- Metrorrhagia: bleeding between periods.
Every woman is unique, so no need to panic! If your periods are light right now, that doesn’t mean they’ll always be that way. Over her lifetime, a woman will notice several changes in her periods. This is completely normal. However, if you have doubts, pain, or notice a lot of irregularities, don’t hesitate to see a specialist, a midwife, your GP or a gynecologist.
Light-flow period panties, a precious ally
Period underwear is of course used to absorb menstrual blood, but not only that. During perimenopause, postpartum, when your period returns after childbirth, and at other times throughout your cycle, washable period panties can be a huge help—an excellent support for managing everything your body is going through.
Because yes, the menstrual cycle is rarely smooth sailing. It’s almost never truly stable and regular. Your cycle is an extraordinary hormonal phenomenon! Every day, something new is happening in your body. And sometimes, you can see it, notice it in your underwear. It’s neither serious nor dangerous—it’s just nature.
Contraception as well as other health, psychological or external reasons can interfere and trigger discharge of different colours and textures. Here’s an overview of the different situations in which a light‑flow period panty can be a huge help!

Bleeding outside your period, or spotting

Intermenstrual bleeding is something we could definitely do without! These little unexpected bleeds always catch you off guard and never give you a warning! You know the ones – those little spots that do their own thing, make their own rules outside your period, right in the middle of your cycle when no one invited them! Spotting, false menstruation, false periods or bleeding between periods: lots of names for the same phenomenon.
Spotting (from the English word “spot”) is quite common. It appears as fairly dark discharge (darker than your usual period), occasional and very light. Stress or a change in contraception are the main causes of spotting (hormonal imbalance). Don’t hesitate to see a doctor if you’re unsure.
Discharge and various secretions
Black, brown, yellow, pink, white or tan, discharges, secretions or other fluids can appear for different reasons. To deal with them, light-flow period panties, a menstrual thong or menstrual tanga are recommended.
These washable pads keep you dry all day. Thanks to them, there's no bad odor, no feeling of dampness. Most importantly, your intimate area is in contact with high-quality, absorbent organic cotton certified by Oeko-tex. It's a far cry from plastic panty liners with dangerous compositions (petroleum, pesticides)! What kind of discharge can you expect? For reference:
- brownish discharge, most often seen on the pill, before or after your period,
- White discharge, or leukorrhea, most often appears around the time of ovulation,
- Yellow discharge accompanied by itching may be a sign of an infection, so don’t hesitate to see a doctor,
- Pinkish discharge often signals that your period is on its way, but it can also appear after sex or during pregnancy.
