Menstrual panties have established themselves in recent years as a fantastic alternative to disposable sanitary products (tampons and sanitary pads)! This new intimate protection, durable and reusable, has serious advantages.
While period panties are extremely reliable sanitary protection, they can sometimes leak.
Why does my period underwear leak? What can I do to fix it? Is period underwear really right for me? How can I avoid leaks? And are leaks actually preventable?
In this article:
This is the most common cause. The period underwear you’re wearing isn’t suitable or sized to optimally capture and hold your menstrual flow. As a result, the absorbent layer of the panties becomes saturated. It can no longer store the flow properly and it overflows. Leaks are then inevitable.
To choose the right style of underwear for your flow, we can only encourage you to read our article: Which period underwear should you choose for your flow?
The zero-leak guarantee with Jade ⭐️
No risk of leaks or overflow with the Jade very heavy-flow period panty! In addition to its super absorbency—equivalent to 5 tampons—Jade has a feature that will really reassure you if you’re skeptical: its gusset is wider than average.
It measures about 10 centimeters. A wide gusset and extended absorbent area mean you’re protected for many hours, day and night!
Another possible cause of leaks is poor care of your absorbent panties. You may have used a detergent that’s too harsh or too chemical, which has damaged the fabrics and the absorbent membrane. Drying on high heat can also impair absorbency.
To properly wash your period underwear, we can only recommend:
to rinse in cold water as soon as you take off your menstrual underwear and flush out all the trapped flow;
wash your period underwear by hand or in the machine at a maximum of 30°C, using a gentle, non-greasy detergent;
to air-dry your period underwear away from any direct heat source (no sun, no radiator and definitely no tumble dryer!)
Stains on your pajamas or sports leggings? You probably chose the wrong style for your activity level.
Here are a few quick tips that you can of course find in more detail and expanded on our website or blog:
For nighttime, go for a style with a very wide absorbent area that comes up high at the front and back of the panties. The absorbent layer should cover both the pubic area and the buttocks so you can sleep soundly (whether you lie on your back or stomach). ➡️ The Clara style is perfect!
For sports, gym, your Pilates session, yoga, basketball or running, choose menstrual protection with high absorbency that’s also very discreet: the seamless heavy-flow menstrual panties are ideal. They absorb everything while remaining completely invisible. ➡️ The Liv style is perfect!
For busy days when you’re far from home, think about the detachable period panty. It’s a great backup or emergency period panty that lets you change very quickly without worrying about little leaks. ➡️ The Gigi style is perfect!
Before buying period underwear, you need to understand your menstrual flow. You can do this by observing and measuring it. You might need medium-flow panties for the first and last days of bleeding, but heavy or very heavy flow panties for the two “peak” days. Every woman is different, every menstrual cycle is different. Only you can truly know what suits you best!
You also need to follow the care instructions and adopt the right habits: rinse in cold water, machine‑wash at a maximum of 30°C on a short cycle, use a gentle detergent, no fabric softener, no tumble‑dryer, and air‑dry away from direct heat.
Depending on the activity, you need to choose the right pair of panties. For a peaceful night and restful sleep, we recommend a wide, highly absorbent style that can hold your flow while lying down (with a long absorbent pad extending both front and back). Same thing for your workout.
Avoid the menstrual thong or the pretty lace period underwear, and instead go for period panties designed for sport: seamless, invisible, for very heavy flow and that won’t move when you do.
Period briefs are highly absorbent underwear. They are designed to collect menstrual flow in the best possible way. A very absorbent gusset (with a high absorption capacity) is sewn into the panties and extends from the front to the back. This layer captures the blood, draws it in and holds it without swelling or becoming saturated.
Clara is a crowd-pleaser! ⭐️

Choice, styles, sizes!
Louloucup period panties are also, and above all:
There are several possible reasons for the leaks you’re experiencing. Your underwear might not be suited to your menstrual flow, or you may not have cared for it properly. If that’s not the case, check the brand, its values, and the composition of your underwear. It may simply be poor quality, made with unsuitable materials.
If your period panties are leaking and smell bad, they’ve probably been worn quite a few times and may be nearing the end of their life. You can still try deep‑cleaning them with white vinegar, baking soda and a long soak. The goal is to neutralize bad odors and dislodge dried blood that may be clogging the membrane.
If you still notice small leaks despite wearing your very heavy-flow period panty, you can also wear a menstrual cup at the same time. It will collect the blood very effectively!
